April Silva, Senior Wetland Ecologist
April has discovered the coveted alignment of her professional goals with her personal passions in her role as Senior Wetland Ecologist for CREST. April’s devotion to her work is inspired by a love for the outdoors and the commitment CREST makes to both restoration ecology and community economics.
April’s primary responsibilities include wetland assessments and permitting for tidal wetland restoration projects in Oregon and Washington, and wetland delineations and permitting for community development. She applies both established and innovative monitoring protocols to characterize tidal wetland restoration project sites, researching the overall ecological response to treatment actions. She maintains a small lab and oversees biological sample collection, processing, data management and reporting.
April obtained a Bachelor’s of Science in Natural Resources, and a Graduate Certificate in Fisheries & Wildlife Management from Oregon State University. She focused her studies on wetland and estuarine ecology. Her career path previous to joining the CREST team included research as an amphibian surveyor for commercial forest lands, an educational outreach intern for coastal estuaries, a year of AmeriCorps service, and a wetland monitoring specialist. All these roles have kept her connected to the Columbia River region, where she has grown up. “I’m most passionate about making a positive difference, both for the environment and our community. Wetland restoration not only restores ecological functions, but also increases flood protection for communities. By learning to work together we can improve natural resource management for coming generations.”

Personal ProfileWhen not working April can still be found outside; camping, hiking, or kayaking. Or perusing bookstores for yet another bird, plant, or insect ID guide.
